WHY THE NAME prvtdncr? A LOVE FOR TINA TURNER PERHAPS?

BEING A HIDDEN ARTISTIC FIGURE?

Tina Turner is my mom and I look exactly like her, so it seemed right.
I also never talk about my art as a way of promoting it and deny I even
make it if given the chance.

DO YOU THINK THAT THROUGH YOUR WORK, THERE IS



A JUXTAPOSITION BETWEEN GRAFFITI, AND THEN PLACING IT INTO A GALLERY SETTING?

I see the originals and think of them in the space they occupied in the real world.
The photos are the documentation and they hopefully function
as a really good photograph.

THEN PHOTOGRAPHY, THEN FRAMED GALLERY SETTING.

The quiet hours of the very early morning, high-end spray paint,
every nozzle available, complete confidence, a huge adrenaline rush, a camera,
editions of 10, exhibited internationally. Beautiful checks. Magazine articles.

I THINK YOUR COUCH TAGGING PIECES ARE BRILLIANT.



THEY GIVE EACH COUCH AN IDENTITY. COULD YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT THAT?

Thank you. The couches are everywhere in los angeles,
so are mattresses. The word comes first, then I look for the couch.
They identify themselves. I do it in broad day light because it is already trash
and once it becomes art, there is a much better chance of it going back inside
someone's house. Reverse psychology. The value doubles at
the very least once it has been painted. 

WHAT DOES PUBLIC ART MEAN TO YOU?

Public art means I exhibit my art for everyone. Passive viewers are my crowd.
The best public art is dangerous and illegal and is bullshit if it is
not at least a felony. The couches are the one exception to that rule.

DOES SEXUALITY PLAY A PART IN YOUR WORK?

Yes, but are you really are asking me why I'm so filthy?
I use filth as a tool to move you away from normal.  I like to push it.
I have always used sexuality in my work and it seems very natural for me.
I'm wide open about all of that.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

I'm making copies of tweeker hooker folk art posters that some
tweeker hooker is posting around town. I steal the original and make a copy
that is bigger and has glitter so that the untrained eye can tell them apart.
I am also always working with the legendary Bodega Vendetta and you can
see a bunch of our shenanigans at sweaterqueens.org. We have been doing
large scale paintings. We wear high heels to reach the high spots.

THAT THEY MIGHT NOT KNOW ALREADY? IF ANYTHING?

That I get very proud of a piece that is out there while everyone is seeing it.
I drive by everyday. I sit up high in my seat so I can see it at the first chance
possible as I'm approaching it. Then I slow way down so that I can view it longer
and so that the cars behind me have to see it longer. Everyday it is up
I feel like a success. Interjecting my voice into the conversation with a bunch
of 15 year old taggers is what the world needs more of.
