Inspiration Station // XI

Some days I get nostalgic for Philadelphia, my hometown. On days like this, I peruse the magical people I know there. Last night I dreamt of an old friend Melanie Bilenker. A world-renowned jeweler, she creates the most beautiful moments from everyday life….with her own hair. Yes, her own hair. Quiet, subtle moments that we take for granted, using something that is whisper thin.

I remember seeing her studio at one point, which was a room in her house. A small room filled with the biggest magnifying glass and tiny tweezers. The patience & love that goes into these pieces about moments that we just let slip by…inspires me.

According to Melanie ““The Victorians kept lockets of hair and miniature portraits painted with ground hair and pigment to secure the memory of a lost love. In much the same way, I secure my memories through photographic images rendered in lines of my own hair, the physical remnants.”

May her serene appreciation of beauty inspire us all.
