WORKAHOLIC // Jean De Merry & Christian Darnaud – Maroselli

Jean De Merry is a furniture studio located in the heart of the design district in Los Angeles, California, with outposts in Chicago, Dallas and New York. From a small French town where successive generations of his family had operated a leather tanning business for four centuries, De Merry – also a renowned novelist and former restauranteur – had possessed a penchant for antiques for many years when he met Darnaud-Maroselli, who brings a strong business and creative background to the partnership. A shared understanding of heritage is at the heart of the company’s conception, along with their knowledge of European techniques of applications on wood, leathers, metals, glass and textiles. The end result, wholly new designs rooted in classical forms and based on traditional ways of manufacturing. Says de Merry, “it’s all in the method.”

Their mission has remained the same since the company’s inception in 2001. Today–in addition to a prestigious roster of independent designers and artisans that Maroselli as creative director behind JDM’s brand has brought forth to the design industry– (including the likes of Philip Nimmo, and Jean-Louis Deniot) — their own JDM eponymous collection is thriving. Incited by a deep appreciation of craft and legacy, founders CDM and JDM set out to create a line of sculptural, sophisticated furniture and objet’s d’art that marry age-old, French techniques with the new generation of American craftsman.

The line offers lighting, casegoods, seating and decorative art that possess high-style, utmost quality and a distinctly French-Deco appeal that set them apart in the contemporary design landscape all manufactured in Los Angeles, CA.

Today, Darnaud-Maroselli and deMerryfind their vision growing exponentially, as their products outfit top-flight projects including Bergdorf Goodman restaurant in New York City, The Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles, The Crown Melbourne in Melbourne, and boutiques such as Dior and Tiffany & Co., along with multitudes of high-end residential properties around the globe. We caught up with the duo to find out what makes them Workaholics.

Who are you and what do you do?

We are Christian Darnaud-Maroselli and Jean de Merry, a duo who started to be involved in the furniture and lighting design and manufacturing 17 years ago.

Where is your workspace?

Our factory is in Los Angeles and our Showrooms are in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles and New York

What made you turn to this direction?

When we started our business, we were importing antiques and selling them at antique shows. The pieces we liked to purchase were rare, so we decided to design and craft our own pieces which were inspired 1st by the 30’s and 40’s deco period. We started with just a handful of pieces… but then we found a mentor with Holly Hunt back in 2007 who helped us perfect our manufacturing process. Since then, our collections grew as well as our business to become what it is now.

Was this always your dream job?

Not at all.

How much of the week is work, how much is play?

We work all the time. But that is the way we play.

What has been the most exciting thing you have done with your work, and what is a dream situation you’d like to find yourself in?

The most exciting thing is to see our design ideas become reality.

How do you find your inspiration?

Art. Nature. Travel. Everything that surrounds us.

How do you define your personal style, work and clothing, etc.?

Casual

What’s something someone may not know about you?

That there are really two minds that built (and continue to build) Jean de Merry.

Anything else you would like to say or for us to know?

No, that’s it for now.
